Zoo you know much about animals?

Posted by User ImageA. Caleb Hartley on November 10th, 2008 filed in Zoo

How much do you know about zoos?  Do you know that most zoos are deeply involved in conservation studies that try to stem the tide of extinctions that are happening faster and faster these days?  Did you know that they engage in educational outreach about animals and the environment and how loss of habitat and pollution and climate change affect different species?  Answer the questions below to join the conversation about zoos, and maybe I’ll see you at the Columbus Zoo one of these days!

Namaste,
A. Caleb Hartley

I’ve been blessed to live in two cities that have amazing zoos. Both the San Diego Zoo, and the Sydney Zoo are amazingly fantastic and are zoos that you can spend the entire day at without getting bored.

I have always wanted to go to the Sydney Zoo, hopefully one day I will make it over there. Flights are so expensive!! I ran across this post on PetermansEye.com and think anyone who is focused on being “green” friendly like me will enjoy it, take a look!

Since I’m a teacher, I need to organize a zoo tour twice per year, and I think I’m quite familiar with the local Zoo…

I am not a supporter of zoos. It is an unnatural habitat for the animals, too much confinement and many experience emotional, physical and mental torment. I could write about this for days, but an example is elephants. They walk 30 miles in the wild, they have very social habits, they are smart and being confined in a small concrete enclosure is abusive. They develop foot disease which is treated w/drugs, they are sometimes alone which is more torment than even the physical struggles. I love animals but am firmly against zoos. A legitimate sanctuary is a better place for conservation and animal refuge.

I have only been to two zoos in my life and to be honest have not been impressed, it is not helped by the fact that these zoos are in the UK which is far removed from the climate of many of the species they ‘host’. I am however blessed to live in a beautiful remote location in Scotland home to a wide range of animals and birds which I can enjoy and observe in natural surroundings.

I used to believe that zoo’s were evil and awful places.

I no longer feel that way and am I a Zoological Society Member and have been for several years. We take the girls to the zoo several times a year, and in all seasons. My favorite time is the fall - and we didn’t make it yet so the very next decent sunny day - WE ARE GOING. I’ve been to the Columbus Zoo (which is awesome) and the San Diego Zoo (Mind Blowing) and someday hope to visit the Syndey Zoo (as it’s been a dream of mine to visit Australia).

Hello, Caleb. I just wanted to let you know I am passing the Lemonade Award on to your site. Please click here for more info. I am glad someone is pointing out how great zoos are due to their connection with animal protection.
