UPS: Brown is - apparently - green!

Not long ago (November 16th, to be exact), Logistics Today (LT) posted a blurb about UPS going paperless in January for all packages and deliveries. According to LT, the paperless option does not apply to “letters or documents.”
In correspondence with Media Relations for UPS, I was told that “a typical WEEKLY bill for a UPS commercial customer is more than 16 pages,” and that the most recent update to UPS’s paperless initiative is the paperless documentation for international customs shipments. Additionally, if a customer changes to paperless billing, currently UPS will donate to the National Arbor Day Foundation!
I was also pleasantly surprised to find that UPS does significantly more than just paperless billing and customs documentation in striving to reduce the company’s impact on the Earth: this is a link to all of UPS’s environmental program information.
Here’s a few of UPS’s “Green Stars:”
- Keep America Beautiful awarded UPS its Vision for America Award in 2007.
- UPS uses many alternative fuel vehicles in its fleet
- UPS is also using Hybrid vans in addition to its alternative fuel vehicles
- Also look here for more about UPS’s hybrid vans
- UPS was recognized by the U.S. EPA for its environmental achievements
- Find out more about UPS’s “Sustainability Effort” by downloading its Sustainability Report (2006)
There is quite a bit more on UPS’s website - check it out for more information!

Play the UPS “Go Paperless” Flash Game: www.paperlessgame.ups.com - fun if you’re really bored at work (like me)! Use your arrow keys to avoid the stacks of paper and other foreign objects…
Anyway - Not only does UPS do what it can to be environmentastically green, the company also has some suggestions to help you drive greener: Tips for Better Gas Mileage from UPS!
Lynette McIntire, Media Relations Representative for UPS also did a podcast about holiday packaging and shipping tips - might be too late for the holidays in 2007, but the tips can be used year-round when sending birthday gifts or gift for any event: listen to the podcast on the Green Living Ideas blog!

In addition to all of their green initiatives, some UPS recycle peanuts, bubble wrap, and other assorting packaging supplies. These are items that normally can not be recycled in your monthly recycling. Since they are located in most neighborhoods, it makes it easy to reycle! Since each on is store is different, call before you bring over your recyclables. I am glad you posted about UPS. Anna http://www.green-talk.com

Thanks, Anna!
This is very true - rather than throw away the packing peanuts and such that come with your deliveries, take them in to a UPS store (formerly Mailboxes, Etc.) and drop them for re-use! It’s a great way to reduce the packaging waste filling up our landfills!
Namaste,
A. Caleb
