International Plant Appreciation Day

I’ve recently been informed that April 13th is International Plant Appreciation Day.  To show your appreciation, it is customary to take your plants out to dinner, or, if it is a workplace plant, to give a small bonus on top of the plant’s regular salary (celery? saladry?).

What?  You don’t pay your plants? Why not?  They pay you in so many ways!  They provide shade and windbreak - bringing the cost of your air-conditioning and heating down, respectively.  They bring food to your table (or rather are food on your table).  They beautify your surroundings - both interior and exterior.  They reduce crime and raise property value.  They even provide the air you breathe.  What could you possibly pay them that would even come close to the value of “natural capital” they provide to you?

How about just paying them some attention!  Learn about plants - learn to identify them beyond a three-year-old level:

Flower“FLOWER!”

Trees“TREES!”

So on this Sunday, April 13th, appreciate your plants.  Notice them more.  Identify them.  Tell your kids what species the plants they see every day are.  Learn how to take care of them.  Learn how much water they need, how much sun, what kind of fertilizer is best for them.  You’ll feel better.  Your plants will feel better.  The Earth will feel better.  And so will all of her inhabitants - animal, vegetable, and mineral.

Below are some sites that will help get you started:

My plants will be so excited - we’re going dancing! I’m not very good, but they’ll like the thought. How will you appreciate your plants on this greates of days? Let us know in the comments!

    I missed this holiday! I do think we should show our plants appreciation year round by planting more of them.

    Rather than producing lots of carbon-emitting humans, lets produce plants which will help clean up the world we’ve been trashing!

    @Erica:

    I was unaware of the holiday, too - until I got an email about it from WebRing (www.webring.com).

    If only I could keep anything green alive for more than a year - my yard would be beautiful! :)

    Namaste.
