Readers Choose!

Posted by A. Caleb Hartley on June 16th, 2008 filed in about, blog

Some of you may have noticed that environmentastic! can sometimes be difficult to read, due to the fact that light brown, small type on a dark brown background is, well, difficult to read. Additionally, there are little quirks to the design of the blog, like the very cramped quarters between the end of one post and the headline of the next.

With all that in mind, below you will find screenshots of the new wordpress templates that I have decided are an option for environmentastic! to change to. At the bottom of this post, you will find a survey asking which of the templates you, my readers, prefer.

Please take a look at each of the options below and then vote for your favorite. You will also notice options for environmentastic! to keep it’s current template, or to take none of the templates. I am debating having a template designed specifically for environmentastic!, but I’m a poor (read cheap) schlub who isn’t making enough money to justify paying a designer just yet… but that will be changing very soon. :)

Now that that is out of the way – here are the contenders:

Option 1

OPTION 1 (above – Click to enlarge)

OPTION 2 (above – Click to enlarge)

OPTION 3 (above – Click to enlarge)

OPTION 4 – (above – click to enlarge)

OPTION 5 (above – Click to enlarge)

OPTION 6 (above – Click to enlarge)

Please vote – this is another way for the important people (all of you) to have a little say about what you read and how you read it! Plus – I’m horrible at making decisions… ;)

Namaste,
A. Caleb Hartley

If you vote for “none of the above,” please let me know of any good wordpress designers you know by leaving a comment. If you like more than one – pick the one you like best, but leave a comment telling me which other ones you approve of as well. Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your input!

I recently went through the same problem and I say you should keep the current one until you can afford to pay someone, however the prices for a pro design are discouraging. The designers that made Johncow or Shoemoney designs
price you with 1500$ min, another pretty good designer also quoted me 1500-2000 to make me the template I wanted. Well, I decided to put up a contest of 300$ on digitalpoint
and got lucky and some dude made me quite a decent design. Now it’s in the coding phase and should go live somewhere in the next 2 days! :)

    Good luck,

    Hi,

I say stay with your current theme until you either find one that really grabs you or until you can get that professionally designed one. The themes you have listed don’t pop out for me. Good luck deciding! :) I know how hard it is to find a good enviro theme. I’ve been looking myself.

I settled on #1 as it is still simple while having earthy colors. What I would change on #1 though would be to replace the red color by green.

I find red color does not fit to your blog’s theme. Green and brown does (and white, of course).

I sympathize with your search for a new template! I’m struggling to find a template for Take Ten right now…I feel that the current one is a little cramped and difficult to read. It seems that it is difficult to find that perfect template!

Call me a lunatic, but I like the original! I have the same issues with my blog though, some people have a hard time reading it. Good luck with your decision and be sure that YOU like it as well!

I like the one you have, the earth under the grass BUT the print is definitely too small for me to read comfortably. It’s worth it when I can.

I chose #3, I like the simple layout with the 2 left columns separated. I also like the white page because I do have a hard time to see on the dark page (aging eyes ya know!). But you have to be happy with what you choose as well. I will read either way.

Look likes most of the voters want you to stick to your current template, at least for now. The templates you chose are no comparison with the one you’re using right now.

I have to say I like this black and brown version the best.

and I find it easy ot read as well.

Noooooo! Don’t do it! I just awarded you the Arte y Pico award for your blog design.

I agree with timinut’s comment. You could make a noticeable improvement by increasing the font size.

I just finished putting mine up, finally! What’s your final decision, btw?

I did commute to school – about a five minute drive and sometimes walked. The problem with on-line learning is that spontaneous discussions can’t arise. I recently finished my masters and took two on-line classes as a part of it. While it was interesting, there wasn’t the bonding of classmates or the intimacy of a classroom setting. While concerts could all be done from virtual stadiums, you lose the singer/audience connection. There is something to be said for human interaction.

I like the third one, as do most people. The only thing is that I tried a three column template on my travel blog and it did not load properly for people using IE.

There is nothing wrong with this blog template except it is brown. You could get some help to increase the amount of space between posts and change the background to a lighter color so you could have black text.

    All the best.
