Sequestering Carbon – a new idea!
Posted by A. Caleb Hartley on December 30th, 2007 filed in Baking Soda, Global, carbon, carbon dioxide, carbon footprint, climate change, energy, environment, environmental, global warming, sequester, technologyRaj at Upcoming Technologies found a great article on Cnet News about a new idea on how to sequester Carbon Dioxide from power plants: by turning it into sodium bicarbonate – a.k.a. Baking Soda!

I think it is better if we don’t create carbon in the first place. Sequestering carbon is an excuse to use polluting coal, then call it clean. You waste a lot of energy by sticking things in the ground.
Wouldn’t it be better if we used carbon mitigation technologies like GreenFuel Technologies which uses carbon to grow algae then turn it into biodiesel.
Or, how about using coal cofiring, use a mix of coal and biomass to fire a coal plant rather than just pure coal. Less carbon. A much better choice.
I wish we didn’t have to use coal at all. But, right now 50% of our energy base is coal.

Nishan – I agree 100%. I would be BETTER if we didn’t create carbon in the first place. But the fact is that right now – WE DO. So what can do with it until the rest of the world wises-up and stops building new coal-fired power plants? And what do we do with the coal-fired power plants already in existence? They won’t just shut down, so we need to think of ways to deal with the waste they produce, until we’ve evolved out of using the wasteful, polluting era that we’ve been “enjoying” for the last 150 or so years.
Thanks for the comment!

No matter what people think we will create carbon for many years to come. No one is going to go with out lights or heat so we must find ways to get rid of it and it is one of the better ideas. I like this idea to help lower the levels of carbon.
